Part 1: Normal Prostate Function aims to review the gross anatomy and histology of the prostate and introduce some clinically relevant concepts of prostate physiology. These include:
1) the secretion of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) by the prostatic glandular epithelium into the seminal fluid and the blood where it can be measured.
2) The role of the enzyme, 5-alpha reductase in converting testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the dominant androgen acting on the prostate and
3) the function of DHT in signalling prostatic cell replication, synthesis of secretory proteins, and growth factors.
